R107 Steering Wheel: Removal and Replacement Options

Replacing or removing the steering wheel on an R107 is a common job, either to repair the horn contact, to fit a restored wheel or to change the look. On late cars with an airbag, safety comes first.

Non-airbag cars

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Remove the horn pad. It is usually pulled or pried off, depending on the wheel.
  3. Mark the position of the wheel on the steering shaft.
  4. Remove the center nut or bolt.
  5. Pull the wheel off the splines. A puller may be needed if it is tight.
  6. Reverse to install, aligning the marks.

Airbag cars

Later US-market R107s have a driver’s airbag. Airbag removal requires following the factory procedure strictly:

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Wait the specified time for the system to discharge.
  3. Remove the airbag module using the specified fasteners.
  4. Store the module face up in a safe place.
  5. Remove the wheel as above.

If you are not comfortable working with airbags, have a qualified shop do it. An airbag can cause serious injury if it deploys during work. If the airbag warning light comes on after reassembly, have the system checked.

Wheel sizes

The R107 used different steering wheels over the years, with differences in diameter and design. Early cars have a larger wheel; later cars, a smaller one. Check the wheel’s part number to know which one you have.

Wood wheels

Wood-rimmed wheels are a popular upgrade or restoration item. They look great but can be slippery and are cold in winter. Choose a quality wheel that is made for the R107 or uses a proper adapter.

Hub adapters

Aftermarket wheels need a hub adapter that fits the R107 steering shaft and the wheel’s bolt pattern. Use a quality adapter that keeps the horn working. Removing an airbag wheel and fitting a non-airbag aftermarket wheel may have legal and safety implications; check local rules and consider the impact on safety.

Safety

  • Always disconnect the battery first.
  • Use the correct torque on the steering nut.
  • Check that the horn and turn signal cancelling work afterward.
  • Check that the wheel is straight when driving straight.

Quick answers

  • Can I swap an early wheel onto a late car? Not if it has an airbag, unless you accept removing it.
  • Why does my turn signal not cancel after changing the wheel? The wheel’s cancelling cam is not engaging; check alignment.
  • Do I need a puller? Sometimes.
  • Is the steering wheel the same as the horn ring? On some wheels, the horn contact is part of the wheel. See horn not working.
