R107 Carpet Kit: Choosing and Installing

New carpet transforms an R107 interior. It is also one of the best chances you will get to check the floors for rust. Here is how I approach a carpet replacement.

Kit types

R107 carpet kits come in two main types:

  • Loop (square weave): similar to the original carpet on many cars, durable and correct-looking.
  • Velour (cut pile): softer and more luxurious; used on some later cars and as an upgrade.

Kits are molded to fit the floor shape and include the footwells, the transmission tunnel, the rear area and often the trunk pieces or the area behind the seats, depending on the kit. Check what is included before buying. Quality varies; buy from an R107 specialist.

Color matching

Original carpet colors were matched to the interior color code. Many suppliers offer the factory colors. Ask for samples to compare with your seats and trim before ordering. Old carpet fades, so compare with a hidden area under the seats.

Removal: seats and console

  1. Disconnect the battery if you will be disconnecting seat or console wiring.
  2. Remove the seats. They are held by bolts to the floor rails.
  3. Remove the center console. See center console removal.
  4. Remove the sill trim and kick panels as needed.
  5. Lift the old carpet out carefully, noting how it fits.

Rust check underneath

With the carpet out, check the floor pans for rust, especially near the footwells and under the seats. Look at the area below the bulkhead and near the drain plugs. Water from leaking seals or blocked drains often rusts the floors under the carpet. See rust check and drain holes. Repair any rust before fitting new carpet.

Install tips

  • Lay the new carpet in the sun or a warm room to relax it before fitting.
  • Fit the large pieces first, then the smaller pieces.
  • Use the original fasteners and clips where possible.
  • Trim only when sure; cut too much and you cannot undo it.
  • Use new sound deadening or insulation under the carpet if the old is wet or damaged.

Cost

A quality carpet kit is moderate in cost. Installation at an upholstery shop adds labor. DIY installation saves money and takes a weekend.

Quick answers

  • Which is more original, loop or velour? It depends on the year and market; check your car’s original carpet.
  • Can I wash old carpet? Light cleaning helps, but faded or worn carpet should be replaced.
  • Is underlay included? Some kits include it; check.
  • Should I do the trunk carpet too? If it is worn, yes, for a matching look.
