Removing the center console on an R107 gives access to the radio, the climate control wiring, the shifter mechanism and the carpet. It is not difficult, but taking parts off in the right order prevents broken trim.

Why remove the console
- To replace or repair the radio
- To access the climate control panel or switches
- To work on the shifter or its light
- To fit new carpet; see carpet kit
- To restore the wood trim
Order of steps
The exact steps vary by year, but a common sequence is:
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove the shifter knob and the shifter trim plate. Take care with the shifter’s light bulb.
- Remove the ashtray and the wood trim around the shifter.
- Remove the radio. Many R107 radios use removal tools inserted into the faceplate. See Becker radios.
- Remove the climate control panel or switches if they are in the way.
- Remove the screws holding the console to the floor and the dash.
- Lift the console out, disconnecting wiring for switches and lights.
Label all wiring and keep screws organized. Take photos at each step.
Wood trim care
The wood trim is real veneer with a lacquer finish. Old lacquer cracks and yellows. Clean the wood with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals. If the lacquer is cracked, a wood trim restorer can refinish it. Handle wood pieces carefully; the veneer can chip.
Radio
With the console out, check the radio wiring, the antenna lead and the speakers. If fitting a modern radio, use the correct adapter and keep the original if you might return the car to stock.
Shifter
The shifter mechanism is easier to clean and adjust with the console removed. Check the shifter light and the selector cable or linkage. If the shifter feels loose, check the bushings.
Reassembly
Reverse the removal. Do not overtighten screws into plastic or wood. Check that all switches and lights work before fitting the last trim pieces.

- Can I damage the wood? Yes, if forced; be gentle.
- Is the console the same on all R107s? It changed over the years; check by year.
- Can I refinish the wood myself? Light polishing yes; cracked lacquer is best left to a specialist.
