R107 Seats: Leather vs MB-Tex and Seat Covers

R107 seats were upholstered in leather, MB-Tex (Mercedes’ durable vinyl) or cloth, depending on year, market and options. Knowing which you have tells you how to clean, repair and value the interior.

Original upholstery types

  • Leather: common on US cars and popular as an option.
  • MB-Tex: a very durable vinyl that looks similar to leather at first glance. Common on many R107s.
  • Cloth or velour: found on some European cars and as an option.

The data card lists the original interior code; see data card decoding.

How to tell leather from MB-Tex

  • Look at the texture: leather has natural, irregular grain; MB-Tex has a more uniform pattern.
  • Look at the seams and the backs: MB-Tex usually has an even, consistent surface everywhere.
  • Check the data card for the interior code.
  • Feel: leather is softer and warms up more quickly to the touch; MB-Tex can feel slightly cooler and firmer.

Repair options

  • Cracked leather: clean, condition and use a leather repair or recoloring kit. Professional repair can restore larger areas.
  • Split seams: can be resewn by an upholsterer.
  • MB-Tex tears: vinyl repair kits work for small tears; larger damage needs a new panel.
  • Worn bolsters: an upholsterer can replace just the worn panel.

Seat covers

Fitted seat covers or new upholstery kits are available for the R107. They are a good option if the original upholstery is beyond repair. Choose a supplier that offers the correct pattern and color.

Re-upholstery cost

Re-upholstering two seats in leather at a professional shop is a significant cost. MB-Tex and cloth are usually cheaper. Kits that you fit yourself or have a local upholsterer fit are another option.

Seat foam

Collapsed foam makes even new upholstery look tired and uncomfortable. When re-upholstering, replace or rebuild the foam. New foam pads are available for many R107 seats. Also check the seat springs and the seat frame.

Quick answers

  • Is MB-Tex worse than leather? It is more durable in many ways; leather feels more luxurious.
  • Can I dye leather seats? Yes, with a leather dye kit or professional recoloring.
  • Do the seats have heaters? Some later cars have optional seat heating.
  • Are the seats the same on all R107s? Styles changed over the years; check by year.
  • How do I clean MB-Tex? Use a mild interior cleaner and a soft brush; avoid harsh solvents.
