R107 Dashboard Cracks: Replace, Repair or Cover?

Cracks in the dashboard top are one of the most common cosmetic problems on an R107, especially on cars that lived in sunny climates. You have three options: cover it, repair it, or replace the dash pad.

Why dashes crack

The R107 dash top is a padded vinyl-covered pad. Years of sun and heat dry the vinyl and the foam underneath. The vinyl shrinks and cracks, often near the defroster vents and the speaker grilles. Once a crack starts, it spreads.

Option 1: Cover

A molded dash cover or a fabric dash mat hides cracks quickly and cheaply. It also protects the dash from more sun damage. It is the simplest choice for a driver car. The downside is that it is not original and can look obvious.

Option 2: Repair

Dash repair specialists can fill and re-texture cracks so they are hard to see. Results depend on the size of the cracks and the skill of the repairer. For small cracks, this is a good middle option. Some owners attempt DIY repair kits, but the texture is difficult to match.

Option 3: New or restored dash pad

A new or professionally restored dash pad gives the best result. New pads are available from Mercedes or reproduction suppliers, and restorers can recover your original pad. It is the most expensive option and requires removing the dash top.

Removal outline

Removing the dash pad on an R107 is a significant job. It usually involves:

  1. Disconnecting the battery.
  2. Removing the instrument cluster. See instrument cluster removal.
  3. Removing the defroster vents, speaker grilles and trim around the windshield.
  4. Removing fasteners that hold the pad, some of which are reached from behind the dash.
  5. Lifting the pad out carefully.

Follow the factory manual; the fastener locations vary by year.

Cost

A cover is the cheapest. A professional repair costs more, and a new or restored dash pad, plus installation, is the most expensive. Get quotes from specialists who know the R107.

Prevention

  • Park in the shade or in a garage.
  • Use a windshield sunshade.
  • Use a quality vinyl protectant that does not leave a greasy shine.
  • Keep the top up or the hardtop on when the car is parked in strong sun for long periods.

Quick answers

  • Can I fix cracks myself? Small ones with a kit, but the texture is hard to match.
  • Does a cracked dash lower value? Yes, especially on high-value cars.
  • Is the dash pad the same on all R107s? Mostly similar; check by year and market.
  • Should I replace the dash and the speakers together? It is a good time to do both; see Becker radios and interior restoration.
