R107 Windshield Replacement: Cost and What to Know

Replacing an R107 windshield is not just a glass job. It involves the seal, the chrome trim and often discovering rust in the windshield frame. Here is what to expect.

When to replace

  • Cracks or chips in the driver’s view
  • Delamination (milky edges) on old laminated glass
  • A leaking seal that cannot be fixed
  • Rust repair on the windshield frame, which requires removing the glass

Glass options

Replacement windshields are available from original-equipment glass makers and aftermarket suppliers. Some are tinted, some have a shaded band. Check that the glass is correct for your car and meets safety standards.

Trim and seal

The R107 windshield uses a rubber seal with chrome trim strips. The seal should be replaced when the glass is replaced; old seals shrink and crack. The chrome trim is easily bent during removal, so handle it carefully. Replacement trim is available but can be expensive.

Rust under the seal

Water leaking past the old seal can rust the windshield frame. This is a common R107 rust area and is often hidden until the glass is removed. Inspect the frame carefully when the glass is out and repair any rust before fitting the new glass. See rust check and rust repair cost.

Shop or DIY?

A glass shop with experience on classic cars is the best choice. Fitting the seal and trim correctly takes skill, and mistakes lead to leaks or broken glass. Some owners do it themselves, but it is a two-person job and requires the right tools and patience.

Cost

Cost depends on the glass, the seal, the trim and any rust repair. A replacement with glass and seal from a specialist can range from several hundred to over a thousand dollars, more if trim or rust repair is needed. Get quotes that include the seal and the trim.

Ask the shop

  • Have you worked on classic Mercedes or R107s?
  • Will you use a new seal?
  • How will you remove and refit the chrome trim?
  • What happens if you find rust?

Quick answers

  • Can I just reseal the windshield? If the glass is good and the frame is sound, a new seal can fix leaks.
  • Does windshield replacement affect the soft top? The top’s front latch area should be checked after the job; see soft top latch.
  • Is the glass the same on all R107s? Mostly, but check by model and year.
  • How do I know if rust is under the seal? Bubbling paint at the frame corners is a warning sign.
