An R107 soft top that is hard to latch, does not seal at the windshield or will not release from the rear is usually out of adjustment. Most of these problems can be solved with patience and the right adjustment.

How the soft top latches
The top latches to the windshield frame at the front with hooks operated by a handle in the front bow of the top. At the rear, the top and its cover lid are released by a mechanism with a cable or lever. Details vary by year; see soft top operation for how to raise and lower the top.
Front latch adjustment
The front latch hooks are adjustable. If the top is too loose, water and wind get in. If it is too tight, the handle is hard to close and the frame is stressed.
- Close the top and check how the front edge meets the windshield frame.
- Adjust the latch hooks in small steps, usually by turning the hook or its adjuster.
- Check that both sides close evenly and the handle locks with firm but reasonable force.
Some owners use a special latch adjustment tool; others use a wrench carefully. Do not force the handle.
Rear release cable
The rear release lets the top cover lid open so the top can be lowered. If the cable stretches or breaks, the lid will not release. Check the cable for fraying and check its adjustment at the ends. Replacement cables are available.
Tension
A new soft top fabric needs time and warmth to settle. Do not overtighten the latches on a new top; let it relax for a few days in warm weather.
Frame alignment
If the top sits unevenly, check that the frame is not bent and that the bolts at the pivots are tight. A misaligned frame causes leaks and makes the latches hard to close. Frame adjustment is best done by an experienced top installer.
Broken cable
If the cable breaks, the lid may need to be released manually by reaching the mechanism. Avoid forcing the lid, which can bend it. See the factory manual for the manual release.
Quick answers
- Why is my top hard to latch? Latch hooks too tight or the top fabric shrunk.
- Can I adjust the latches myself? Yes, in small steps.
- Why does the top leak at the windshield? Latch adjustment or a worn front seal.
- Is a new top needed? Not always; see soft top replacement.
