Hardtop & soft top

R107 Hardtop Seals Leaking: Fixes

A leaking hardtop is common on R107s with original seals. Water usually enters where the hardtop meets the windows, the windshield frame or at the rear.

Where hardtops leak

  • Front edge where the hardtop meets the windshield frame.
  • Side seals where the hardtop meets the door and quarter windows.
  • Rear seal where the hardtop sits on the body.
  • Rear window seal around the hardtop glass.

How to find the leak

  1. With the hardtop fitted and the windows closed, have a helper run water slowly over the roof edges.
  2. Sit inside with a flashlight and look for water.
  3. Start at the lowest areas and work upward.

Seal set

Hardtop seal sets include the front, side and rear seals. Buy a quality set from an R107 specialist; poor-quality seals do not fit well. The side seals are especially important for wind noise.

Latch adjustment

The hardtop’s latches pull it down onto the seals. If they are out of adjustment, the hardtop does not compress the seals evenly and leaks. Check that the latches pull the top firmly. See hardtop latches.

Window adjustment

The door windows must meet the hardtop’s side seals correctly. If the windows sit too far in or out, water and wind get past. Window adjustment is covered in door and window seals.

Rear window seal

The rear window seal can harden and leak. Replacing it involves removing the glass, which is a job for a specialist or a careful DIY with the right tools. Check the area under the seal for rust.

Cost

Seal sets are moderate in cost. Labor depends on whether windows need adjusting and whether the rear window seal is replaced. Doing the side and front seals yourself is achievable.

Quick answers

  • Can I use rubber conditioner? It helps keep seals soft but does not fix shrunken seals.
  • Why do I hear wind noise? Usually a side seal or window adjustment.
  • Should I store the hardtop on a stand? Yes, it protects the seals; see hardtop hoist or stand.
  • Does a leaking hardtop cause rust? Water in the cabin can rust the floors.
  • How do I know which seal is leaking? A slow water test with a helper inside is the most reliable way.
  • Should I adjust the latches after fitting new seals? Yes, new seals are thicker and may need adjustment.
