Hardtop & soft top

R107 Hardtop and Soft Top: The Complete Owner’s Guide

Part of the R107 deal is living with two roofs: a factory hardtop for cold months and a soft top for everything else. When seals die, you get wet seats and a head start on cabin rust. When latches fight you, people force them and break things. This guide is the ownership overview; step photos belong in hardtop removal and money talk in soft top replacement cost.

Hardtop: what it is for

The hardtop turns the SL into a quiet coupe for winter storage and cold drives. It is a painted body-color (or sometimes contrasting) shell with a headliner and seals that must match the windshield and body channels. A hardtop that “almost” latches will leak and eventually damage seals.

Weight and handling

Plan on roughly 75–80 lb (about 35 kg) — verify for your year before inventing a one-person circus. Two people and knee pads beat heroics. Ceiling hoists and wheeled stands exist because garage floors and human spines both have limits.

Removal and refit sequence (overview)

  1. Protect paint at contact points
  2. Release latches in the order your year’s manual describes (do not pry)
  3. Lift straight up with help or a hoist
  4. Store on a stand that supports the correct points — not on the rear seal
  5. Refit by aligning carefully before tightening anything

Missing tools and seized latches are why people crack painted flanges. Penetrating oil and patience are cheaper than a respray.

Soft top operation

Lower and raise the top with the header latches fully understood. If the top stops halfway, find the bind — do not motor or yank through it. Operate the top a few times a year even if you leave the hardtop on most winters so joints do not seize. Cold vinyl tears; wait for a warmer afternoon when you can.

Seals, drains, and leaks

Hardtop seals, soft-top seals, and A-pillar paths all age. After rain, check carpets and the top well. Standing water in the well is a rust factory. Clear debris and replace seals before you replace carpet foam.

Rear window realities

Plastic rear windows haze and scratch. Light haze sometimes responds to careful plastic polish; deep cracks and yellowing need a new window or a full top. Some replacement tops offer glass rear windows — nicer optically, different fold and weight. Decide before you order.

When to repair vs replace the soft top

  • Repair: localized stitch failures, one seal, a serviceable window
  • Replace: fabric rotten at seams, pads shot, frame issues, window beyond polish

Get quotes that include labor to strip and set the frame. Fabric-only prices are fantasy on a neglected top.

Storage tips

Hardtop: dedicated stand or hoist, cover to keep dust off the paint, never stacked under lumber. Soft top: dry before you leave it down for months; mildew is easier to prevent than to remove.
