R107 Hardtop Latches and Roof Clasps

A hardtop that rattles, leaks or sits unevenly is often a latch problem. The R107 hardtop is held by latches at the front and fastenings at the rear, and they need to be adjusted to clamp the top evenly.

Latch locations

  • Front: the hardtop latches to the windshield frame.
  • Rear: fastenings at the rear of the hardtop secure it to the body. On many cars these are operated from inside the car with a key or lever.

Check the factory manual for your year; the mechanism details and the tool used for the rear fastenings vary.

How they lock

The latches pull the hardtop down onto its seals. The front latches clamp the top to the windshield frame, and the rear fastenings secure it to the body. When all are properly adjusted and locked, the hardtop is tight and does not move.

Diagnosing a loose hardtop

  • Rattles over bumps: a loose latch or a worn seal.
  • Wind noise at the front: front latch adjustment or front seal.
  • Leaks: see hardtop seals.
  • Hardtop sits unevenly: rear fastenings not fully engaged or worn.

Check that each latch closes firmly. Look for worn or broken latch parts.

Adjustment

The front latches can be adjusted to change how firmly they pull the hardtop down. Adjust in small steps, checking that both sides are even. Rear fastenings should be fully engaged; if they are worn, replace them.

Replacement

Latch parts are available from Mercedes and specialists. Replacing a latch involves removing the hardtop’s interior trim to reach the mechanism. Keep the screws and clips organized.

Tools

Basic hand tools, a trim removal tool and the key or lever for the rear fastenings. Keep that tool in the car; without it the hardtop cannot be removed or secured. See hardtop removal.

Quick answers

  • Can I drive with a loose latch? A loose hardtop can be damaged or cause leaks. Fix it before driving.
  • Why does my hardtop leak after adjustment? Check the seals.
  • Can I remove the hardtop alone? With a hoist, yes; see hardtop hoist or stand.
  • Are latches the same on all R107s? Mostly similar, but details vary by year.
  • What tool opens the rear fastenings? Many cars use a key or lever kept with the tool kit; check your car.
  • Why does my hardtop creak? Dry seals or loose latches; treat seals and check latches.
