R107 Soft Top Rear Window: Replace or Repair

The rear window in an R107 soft top is usually the first part of the top to look tired. Plastic windows go cloudy, yellow or crack. Before you replace the whole top, see whether the window can be restored or replaced on its own.

Plastic vs glass windows

Original R107 soft tops use a flexible plastic rear window. Some aftermarket tops offer a heated glass window. Glass stays clear much longer, but adds weight and needs careful folding. Plastic windows are lighter but need care.

Cleaning hazy plastic

  1. Wash with mild soap and water.
  2. Use a plastic window cleaner and polish made for convertible windows.
  3. For light haze, use a fine plastic polish and a soft cloth.
  4. Avoid household glass cleaners, which can damage the plastic.

Heavy haze or yellowing is usually permanent.

Zip-in replacement

Some aftermarket tops use a zip-in rear window that can be replaced without replacing the whole top. Check whether your top has a zipper around the window.

Sewn-in windows

If the window is sewn in, an upholstery shop can sew in a new window. This is cheaper than a new top if the fabric is still good.

Cost

Cleaning costs very little. A sewn-in replacement window at an upholstery shop is moderate. A new top with a new window is the most expensive option. See soft top replacement cost.

Folding the window

Plastic windows crack when folded in the cold. If possible, put the top down only in warm weather, and place a soft cloth between the window and the frame when folding.

Quick answers

  • Can I repair a cracked plastic window? Small cracks can be sealed temporarily, but replacement is the lasting fix.
  • Why does the window yellow? Sunlight and age.
  • Can I fit a glass window to my top? It requires a top designed for glass.
  • Is the rear window covered by a new top? Yes, new tops come with a new window.
  • Can I fit a heated glass window to an original top? Not usually; it needs a top designed for it.
  • How do I store a top with a plastic window? Clean and dry, ideally with the top up in a warm garage.
  • Will a car cover scratch the window? A clean, soft cover is fine; avoid dragging a dusty cover over it.
