R107 Belts: Which Belts, Sizes, Tension and Replacement

An R107 V8 uses several separate V-belts rather than one serpentine belt. They are cheap, easy to inspect and easy to forget. A snapped belt can mean no charging, no power steering or overheating.

How many belts and what each drives

The exact layout depends on model and options, but a typical R107 V8 has belts for:

  • Alternator and water pump/fan pulley
  • Power steering pump
  • A/C compressor (where fitted)
  • Air pump on some emissions-equipped cars

Some cars use a double belt on one drive. Note your car’s layout with photos before removing anything.

Belt order

Belts are nested: the front belt must come off before the one behind it. Generally, the A/C and air pump belts are outermost and must be removed first. Reinstall in reverse order.

Tension check

  • Press the belt midway on its longest run. Typical deflection is around 5–10 mm, but check the manual for your belt.
  • A belt that squeals on startup or with the steering at full lock is loose or glazed.
  • A belt that is too tight can wear water pump and alternator bearings.

Tension is set by moving the alternator or pump on a slotted bracket or with an adjuster bolt.

Replacement steps

  1. Disconnect the battery if working near the alternator.
  2. Loosen the pivot and adjuster on the component.
  3. Push it in to slacken the belt and lift it off.
  4. Fit the new belt, set tension, tighten the pivot and adjuster.
  5. Run the engine and recheck tension after a short drive.

Squeal causes

Worn or glazed belts, low tension, a seized pulley bearing, or fluid contaminating a belt. If a new belt squeals, check the pulleys spin freely and are aligned.

Sizes by model

Belt sizes depend on engine, year and options. Read the number on the old belt or look it up in the catalog for your engine number. Carry a spare set in the trunk with the right wrench; see road trip prep.

Quick answers

  • How often should I change belts? Inspect at every oil change and replace on condition, or every few years if the car sits.
  • Can I replace just one belt? Yes, but if one is cracked the others are usually similar in age.
  • Why does my belt squeal only when cold and wet? Older belts harden and slip until they warm up. If tension is right, replace the belt.
  • Do I need special tools? Usually only sockets, wrenches and a pry bar used carefully on a solid part of the component, never on the alternator case fins.
  • What happens if the alternator/water pump belt breaks? The battery light comes on and the engine will overheat. Pull over and stop the engine.
