Mirror adjustment on the R107 changed over the years. Before diagnosing a “power mirror” problem, confirm what your car actually has.

Which R107s have power mirrors
Earlier cars use a manual remote mirror adjusted by a knob or lever on the door panel, connected to the mirror by cables. Later cars, especially late-1980s models, have electric adjustment on at least one mirror. Availability varies by year and market, so check the switch on your door panel or center console and the options on your data card.
Manual remote mirrors
If a manual mirror does not move, the cables inside the door may be broken or disconnected. Access is through the door panel. See door panel removal.
Switch test
For electric mirrors:
- Check the fuse for the mirror circuit.
- Using the wiring diagram, check for power at the switch.
- Check that the switch sends power to the correct wires in each direction.
- A switch that works in only some directions has worn contacts.
Motor test
Feed the mirror motor directly with fused jumper wires at the connector. If the mirror moves, the motor is fine and the problem is in the switch or the wiring. If it does not, the motor or the mirror mechanism is seized. Some mirror motors can be freed with gentle movement and lubrication.
Wiring through the door
The wiring passes from the body into the door through a rubber boot near the hinge. Repeated opening and closing breaks wires inside the boot over time. Pull back the boot and inspect for broken wires. Splice and insulate properly with heat shrink.
Mirror glass replacement
The mirror glass is held to a backing plate. Replacement glass is available, either flat or convex depending on the side and market. Removal involves carefully releasing the glass from its holder; warm the glass slightly and work slowly. Wear gloves and eye protection in case the glass breaks.
Heated mirrors
Some cars have heated mirror glass. If the heating does not work, check the fuse and the heating element connections on the back of the glass.
Quick answers
- Can I convert manual mirrors to electric? It is possible but involves wiring, switch and mirror changes.
- Why does only one direction work? Usually the switch.
- Do I need special tools? Basic hand tools, a trim tool and a multimeter.
- Is the mirror glass the same on both sides? Not always. Check the part.
