R107 Wipers Not Working: Relay, Switch and Motor

When the wipers on an R107 stop or work only on one speed, the fault is usually in the relay, the stalk switch, the motor or the linkage. A methodical check finds it quickly.

How the system works

The wiper switch is on the combination stalk on the steering column. It controls a wiper relay, which handles the intermittent function and park position, and the wiper motor under the cowl in front of the windshield. A linkage connects the motor to the two wiper arms. The washer pump sits on or near the washer reservoir in the engine bay.

Wiper relay location

The wiper relay location varies by year: on many cars it is in the engine compartment near the fuse box or under the dash. Check the wiring diagram for your year. A failing relay often causes the intermittent function to stop, or the wipers to not return to park.

Step 1: Fuse and relay

Check the wiper fuse. Then swap the wiper relay with a known-good one if available. If the wipers come back, the relay was the problem.

Step 2: Switch test

Use the wiring diagram to identify the wires at the combination switch. With a multimeter, check that the switch sends power to the correct terminal in each position. A switch that works only in some positions has worn contacts.

Step 3: Motor

Feed the motor directly from the battery with fused jumper wires, as shown in the diagram. If it runs, the motor is good. If it only hums, it is seized or the linkage is stuck. If it does nothing, the brushes or windings may be gone. Motors can be rebuilt or replaced with exchange units.

Step 4: Linkage

If the motor runs but the arms do not move, or only one arm moves, the linkage has come apart. The ball sockets in the linkage wear and pop off. Repair kits with new bushings are available. The linkage sits under the cowl panel, so remove the cowl cover to reach it.

Washer pump

If the washers do not work, check the fuse, the pump and the hoses. Listen for the pump running when you operate the switch. A running pump with no spray means a blocked nozzle or a disconnected hose.

Quick answers

  • Why do the wipers not park? The park contact in the motor or the relay.
  • Why do the wipers run slowly? A dry linkage or worn motor.
  • Can I fit modern wiper blades? Yes, as long as the arm fitting matches.
  • Do wiper problems mean water leaks? Check the cowl drains at the same time; see drain holes.
