US-market R107s use four round sealed-beam headlights, while European cars have large one-piece headlight units. Many US owners consider converting to the European lights for the cleaner look and, with good bulbs, better light. Here is what is involved.

US vs Euro lights
- US cars: four round headlights (sealed beams or replaceable-bulb units) in a housing with separate parking and turn lights, to meet US regulations of the time.
- European cars: one-piece headlight units on each side, combining the main light, the fog light and the turn signal or parking light, depending on year and market. They usually use H4 bulbs for the main beam.
Legal notes
European headlights were not designed to US standards. Whether they are legal for road use depends on your state’s rules and enforcement; many states require DOT-compliant lighting. Check your state’s vehicle code and inspection requirements before converting. Keep the original US lights so the car can be returned to stock.
Parts needed
- European headlight units (left and right), new or used
- Headlight buckets or mounting parts if different from the US ones
- Wiring adapters and connectors, and a relay kit if desired
- Possibly new trim pieces or bezels
- Bulbs: H4 main bulbs and the correct bulbs for fog and parking lights
Some suppliers sell complete conversion kits. Make sure the units are for left-hand-drive traffic.
Wiring
US and European wiring differ at the headlights. Conversion requires adapting the connectors and sometimes adding a relay to supply the higher current for H4 bulbs. Adding relays reduces current through the headlight switch and improves brightness. Fog light function may require extra wiring and a switch, depending on your car.
Aiming
After conversion, aim the headlights correctly. European units have adjusters, and the beam pattern is designed for right-hand traffic if you buy LHD units.
Cost
Euro headlight units are expensive, especially in good condition. A conversion with new units and wiring is a significant investment. Used units can be cheaper, but check for cloudy lenses and broken mounts.
Quick answers
- Will Euro lights fit without changes? Usually some mounting and wiring changes are needed.
- Is it reversible? Yes, if you keep the original parts.
- Are Euro lights brighter? With good bulbs and relays, many owners find them better.
- Does it affect value? It is a matter of taste; reversible conversions have little effect for most buyers.
- Do I need different bumpers? No; the headlights can be converted without changing bumpers, though the look differs from a full Euro car.
