R107 Dimensions and Weight (Every Model)

R107 dimensions depend mostly on the bumpers. European cars are compact; US cars from 1974 on carry large 5 mph impact bumpers that add length front and rear. Here are the figures I use, from published specifications. They vary slightly by source and model year, so verify against your owner’s manual for critical measurements.

Length, width, height and wheelbase

Model / market Length Width Height Wheelbase
European SL (all models) 4,390 mm (172.8 in) 1,790 mm (70.5 in) about 1,290–1,300 mm (50.8–51.2 in) 2,460 mm (96.9 in)
US SL with impact bumpers (1974–1985) about 4,630 mm (182.3 in) 1,790 mm (70.5 in) about 1,290–1,300 mm 2,460 mm (96.9 in)
US 560SL (1986–1989) 4,580 mm (180.3 in) 1,790 mm (70.5 in) about 1,300 mm (51.2 in) 2,455 mm (96.7 in)

From 1974, US bumpers were extended by about 8 inches (203 mm) at each end to meet the 5 mph impact standard, and US cars kept them until 1989.

Curb weight by model

Published curb weights range widely depending on the source and equipment. As a guide:

  • European 450SL: about 1,585 kg (3,494 lb)
  • US 450SL and 380SL: about 1,630–1,660 kg (3,600–3,650 lb)
  • US 560SL: about 1,620–1,715 kg (3,570–3,780 lb), depending on source and whether fluids and the hardtop are included

Treat these as approximate. For lifting and towing, use the figures on the door jamb or in the owner’s manual, and allow a margin.

Garage fit

An R107 is short enough for most garages. A US car at about 182 inches long fits in a standard single garage with room to walk around it. Width with mirrors is greater than the body width of 70.5 inches, so leave space to open the long doors. If you plan a hardtop hoist, check ceiling height with the car’s height plus the hardtop’s lift clearance.

Hardtop weight

The steel and glass hardtop is heavy enough that two people should lift it, or one person with a hoist. Figures quoted by owners are commonly in the range of 35–40 kg (about 75–90 lb), but I have not found an official factory figure, so treat that as approximate. See hardtop removal.

Trailer and lift notes

For transport, a car hauler or enclosed trailer needs a capacity well above the car’s weight. On a lift, use the reinforced points described in jack points.

Quick answers

  • Is the 560SL longer than a 380SL? The 560SL’s revised US bumpers make it slightly shorter than earlier US cars, at 180.3 in.
  • How wide is the R107? 1,790 mm (70.5 in) body width.
  • How much does the SLC differ? Its wheelbase is 360 mm (14.2 in) longer.
  • Will it fit in a shipping container? Yes, with room to spare in a standard 20-foot container.
