Engine Oil and Filter Change – Engine 102.9611983

Engine Oil and Filter Change – Engine 102.9611983

The Mercedes-Benz engine 102.961, is a reliable and well-engineered powerplant found in various classic models. Like any aging engine, regular maintenance is crucial to ensure its longevity and performance. One of the most essential maintenance tasks is changing the engine oil and filter at the recommended intervals. Over time, engine oil degrades, losing its ability to lubricate and protect internal components, while the oil filter becomes clogged with contaminants. This guide outlines the proper procedure for changing the oil and filter in the 102.961 engine, helping to keep your classic Mercedes running smoothly for years to come.

Specified SAE viscosity classes during continuous ambient temperatures

Following the SAE grades exactly according to the ambient air temperatures would result in frequent engine oil changes. Therefore, the temperature ranges for the SAE grades should be regarded as a guideline that may be exceeded for brief periods.

Oil Capacity In Liters

Engine 102.961 102.983

Total capacity during oil and filter change 4.5 5.0

Oil pan 4.3 4.8

Oil dipstick color code light blue-gray

Torque specifications (Nm)

Oil pan drain plug 30 25

Center bolt, oil filter cover 25 25

Special tools

  • Before suctioning or draining engine oil, drain the oil filter by unscrewing the center bolt and removing it along with the oil filter cover.
  • Suction engine oil via an oil dipstick tube with the engine at operating temperature.

If no suction unit is available:

  • Drain engine oil from oil pan (arrow).
  • Replace filter element.
  • Replace the rubber seal ring (1) on the cover.
  • Check seal ring (2) on the center bolt and replace it as appropriate.
  • NOTE: There are two oil filter versions which differ in cover and rubber seal ring diameter and in thickness of rubber seal ring.
  • Use care not to use the incorrect rubber seal ring (1).
  • Torque center bolt to 25 Nm with a torque wrench.
  • If oil has been drained from the oil pan, replace the seal ring on the drain plug.
  • Tighten the oil drain plug to 30 Nm or for engine 102.983 to 25 Nm.
  • Add engine oil.
  • Run the engine and check for leaks.
  • Check oil level approx. 2 min. after stopping the engine at operating temperature.

Summary

Regular oil and filter changes are vital for preserving the performance and longevity of the Mercedes-Benz 102.961 engine. Due to the engine’s age, maintaining clean, high-quality oil is essential to prevent excessive wear and ensure proper lubrication. By following the correct procedure—draining the old oil, replacing the filter, refilling with the recommended oil, and checking for leaks—owners can extend the life of their classic engine. Always dispose of used oil and filters responsibly. With consistent maintenance, the 102.961 engine can continue to perform reliably for many more miles.
